Andheri West, Mumbai, since 2019 Monday to Saturday, first class at 6 am

Lift properly, with a coach on every set.

Small-group strength classes in Andheri West. Eight people to a class, one coach watching every rep, and a programme that runs in twelve-week blocks so you can see your numbers move.

Classes: Strength, Conditioning, Mobility and Olympic lifting.

A coach correcting a member's squat position while the rest of the small group works at their racks
Strength, Tuesday 7:15 am. Week six of the block.

Nobody lifts at Forge without a coach watching.

Classes are capped at eight people, and we run 34 of them a week. You follow a written programme in twelve-week blocks, your numbers go in a logbook, and the coach on the floor knows what you squatted last Thursday.

New members start with an empty bar and earn the plates. The first month feels slow. After that you'll add weight most weeks.

420 square metres of training floor, off Veera Desai Road.

Four kinds of class

Most members lift twice a week and use their other sessions for whatever they're short on. Your coach will tell you which, usually within the first fortnight.

  1. The core of everything we do. Squat, bench press, deadlift and overhead press, programmed in twelve-week blocks with the weight going up in small, planned steps. You warm up as a group, then work at your own rack with your own numbers.

    Length
    60 minutes
    Who it's for
Everyone. Beginners start on the empty bar.
    Coached by
    Kabir Shetty, Ananya Rao
  2. Intervals on the rower, air bike, sled and kettlebells. Hard enough that you'll want the full rest, short enough that it doesn't eat into your lifting. Every session has a scaled version, and the coach will tell you which one to pick.

    Length
    45 minutes
    Who it's for
Anyone. Your fitness will improve faster than your strength.
    Coached by
    Farhan Merchant
  3. Slow, deliberate work on hips, ankles, upper back and shoulders, aimed at the positions you need for lifting. Useful if you sit at a desk for nine hours, or if your squat stops a few inches short of where it should.

    Length
    45 minutes
    Who it's for
Desk workers, stiff lifters, anyone coming back from a break.
    Coached by
    Farhan Merchant
  4. The snatch and the clean and jerk, taught in pieces. You'll spend your first month on positions with a PVC pipe and a light bar before anything heavy goes overhead. Capped at six, because we have six platforms.

    Length
    60 minutes
    Who it's for
Members with three months of strength classes, or past lifting experience.
    Coached by
    Ananya Rao

  • Farhan Merchant

    Conditioning and mobility
